Old City, Turquoise Coast
& the Best of the Turkish Riviera
Antalya is Turkey's most visited coastal city — ancient history, a beautiful old harbour, and some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean.
Why Antalya?
Antalya combines what most coastal cities can't — a genuinely ancient old city (Kaleiçi) with 2,000 years of layered history, a turquoise coast with exceptional beaches, and easy access to Lycian ruins that are among the finest in the ancient world. It's also far more varied than its package holiday reputation suggests.
Kaleiçi — The Old City
Kaleiçi is Antalya's ancient walled city — Roman harbour walls, Hadrian's Gate (built in 130 AD for Emperor Hadrian's visit), a 2nd-century minaret (Yivli Minare), and narrow Ottoman-era streets lined with restored houses, boutique hotels and restaurants. Walk it early morning or late evening when the day-trippers have left. The harbour below is beautiful at any time of day.
The Beaches
Konyaaltı Beach — Antalya's main city beach, pebbly but clean, backed by the Taurus Mountains. Free, with paid sun lounger sections. Lara Beach — fine sand, more resort-oriented, 15km east of the city centre. Kaputaş Beach — a stunning turquoise cove accessible by steps from the coastal road, between Kaş and Kalkan. One of Turkey's most photographed beaches. Boat tours from Antalya often stop here.
Day Trips — Perge, Aspendos & More
Within 30–50km of Antalya are some of the finest ancient sites in Turkey. Perge — a vast Hellenistic and Roman city. Aspendos — the best-preserved Roman theatre in the world, still used for performances. Termessos — a mountain city never conquered by Alexander the Great, dramatic ruins at 1,000m altitude. Boat tours along the coast to waterfalls, bays and ancient ruins are a Antalya staple — book from the old harbour.
