Pubs, Museums, Parks
& the City That Never Repeats

London is one of the world's great cities — endlessly varied, impossible to exhaust. This guide cuts through to what actually matters.

Why London?

London is 2,000 years old and feels like it's being reinvented every decade. The British Museum, the National Gallery, the Tate Modern — all free. The parks, the markets, the river — all free. London is one of the most generous cities in the world for those who know where to look.

London is not one city. It's about 30 neighbourhoods that happen to share a postal code.

The Must-See Landmarks

Tower of London — 1,000 years of history, the Crown Jewels, the Beefeaters. Book in advance. Westminster — Big Ben, Parliament, Westminster Abbey. Walk the south bank of the Thames from Waterloo Bridge for the best free skyline view in London.

💡 The Tate Modern, National Gallery, British Museum and Natural History Museum are all free. Build your trip around them.

The Neighbourhoods

Shoreditch — street art, independent restaurants, the best coffee in London. Notting Hill — Portobello Road market (Saturday), beautiful townhouses, relaxed cafés. Borough Market (London Bridge) — one of the best food markets in Europe, Thursday–Saturday.

Walk across Tower Bridge at dawn. The city belongs to you for an hour.

What to Eat in London

🥐 Borough Market — best food market in London. Try everything. Saturday is the best day.
🍛 Brick Lane — London's Bangladeshi curry mile. Cheap, genuine, excellent.
🐟 Fish & chips — properly done, from a chippy. Not a tourist restaurant.
Flat white — London has one of the world's best specialty coffee scenes. Shoreditch and Soho are the epicentres.
⚠️ Avoid restaurants in Leicester Square and around the major monuments — tourist prices, tourist quality. Walk two streets away.

Best Time to Visit London

🌸 Spring (Apr–Jun) — parks in bloom, longer days, best weather
🍂 Autumn (Sep–Oct) — fewer tourists, still mild, great atmosphere
❄️ Winter (Nov–Jan) — Christmas lights, ice rinks, cosy pubs
☀️ Summer — long days, festivals, but very busy

Hotel tipAvoid the cheapest options around Oxford Street — noisy, overpriced for quality. South Bank or Shoreditch gives far better value and experience.

Booking near Piccadilly Circus

It looks central but it's surrounded by tourist restaurants and overpriced hotels. South Bank or Shoreditch gives a much better experience.

Skipping free museums

British Museum, Natural History Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern — all world-class and completely free. Most visitors don't plan enough time for them.
